CHAPTER TWENTY EIGHT
OâReilly realised this wasnât going to blow over when DC Owen turned left onto the road that led towards the station. He spotted the placards first. There were more than fifty people outside the gates of the car park. Half of them were holding crude sign boards with various slogans scrawled on them.
Fear on the island was written on quite a few of them.
Police apathy on the island was another popular one.
As they got closer OâReilly noticed there were quite a few people in bike leathers joining in the protest.
âThis doesnât look good, sir,â DC Owen stated the obvious.
âSee if you can get through the gates into the car park,â OâReilly told her.
Four officers in uniform were fighting a losing battle trying to keep the crowds away from the entrance. DC Owen slowed down and managed to edge her way through to the car park.
The din was unbearable when they got out of the car. OâReilly heard his name being screamed over the cacophony of sound. He didnât turn around to see who was shouting at him â instead he and DC Owen ran inside the station.
âWhat on earth is happening out there?â DS Skinner was standing with DC Andy Stone by the front desk.
âTheyâve only just arrived,â DC Stone said. âThey werenât there half an hour ago when I went out for a smoke. What do you think they want?â
âBlood,â OâReilly said. âTheyâre baying for our blood. I think weâre going to need some help.â
He walked down the corridor and stopped outside Superintendent Hayesâ office.
He was about to knock on the door when he heard the sound of raised voices coming from inside the office. Then he realised it was just one voice -Superintendent Hayesâ and he assumed she was talking to someone on the telephone. He waiting for the noise to die down and knocked hard on the door.
âWhat do you want?â The tone of her voice told OâReilly a story of its own.
He went inside and stood face to face with her. She was glaring at him.
âWhat the hell have you done?â
âI havenât done anything, Maâam. That lot out there has nothing to do with me.â
âIâve just had a very unpleasant conversation with the deputy chief officer. He wants some answers. His CO is breathing down his neck, DCO Hill has made it my problem and itâs about to become your problem, Liam. What the hell have you done?â
âI think this is because of what that jackal from the Herald wrote,â OâReilly said. âItâs all lies. None of it is true.â
âI read it. What were you thinking of? What were you thinking of when you decided to go out on a date with a possible suspect in this investigation barely an hour after promising the entire island you wouldnât rest until the gunman was behind bars?â
OâReilly looked her in the eye. âWhat was I thinking? I was thinking that perhaps after fourteen exhausting hours at work it might do me some good to wind down a bit.
